Fossilized Shell

Fossilized Shell - Not Sure What Type

Fossilized Shell

This is a fossilized Shell, possibly a clam shell, though we aren't sure. We got it as part of an old rough rock collection. Unfortunately, we don't know where it was collected, but we're guessing probably somewhere in California. From what we can tell, it looks to be in nice condition. It is encrusted with dirt, as if just dug out of the ground. We quickly washed it off and some of the dirt easily came off, but it will require a little more effort to get the rest of it off. It is roughly 5 1/2" x 3 3/4" and about 2" thick. It weighs 1 lb 1.4 ounces, or 490 grams.

These are the fossil bones, all four claws, of a wolf, collected from the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles. It is from the Pleistocene Era. The person we received this specimen from bought it from a dealer with the information that it was from the Paul Spinner Estate Collection, that it is 100% authentic, and of excellent quality enamel and patina.

Fossil Shell

Fossilized Abalone Shell

This is a really neat fossilized Abalone Shell. It is rough, uncut, and very nice on its own as a specimen, though it is in imperfect condition, as visible in the 2nd slide show photo. I took pictures of it naturally, not wet at first, but decided to see how much dirt would come off and what it would look like wet. Quite a bit of dirt did come off, though you could probably get more with some work and care. You can now see a little opalessence coming through - kind of bronze-rainbow colors, though not really captured by the photos. It is 5 3/4" x 4" on the inside, and when laying face down stands a little less than 2" thick. It weighs 1 pound 4 ounces, or 610 grams. Potentially, a really neat specimen!

Large Fossil Vertibrae

Large Fossil Vertibrae - We think Dinosaur, Maybe Whale

Large Fossil Vertibrae

This is a large fossil vertebrae bone. We think it is from a dinosaur. We heard from an interested party that it might be a vertebrae from a Triceratops. However, when the person looked closer at the photos, he described with good, logical information why he thought this might be from a whale instead. It may well be. However, we have numerous other samples of whale bone (smaller pieces), and comparing this piece and the whale bones directly in hand, and not from photos, it seems to me to have a very different look to it from the whale bone. However, we have very little experience with either dinosaur or whale bones. So whatever it actually is, we believe it to none-the-less be an awesome fossilized bone, much larger than what is normally found, and belonging to a larger species such as dino, but possibly whale. It is rough and uncut. It does not appear to be agatized that we can tell, but a wonderful specimen just as-is! We acquired it as part of a large collection of rough rocks. The person who collected it collected material all over California, Oregon and other nearby states between the 1950's to 1980's. We know he did collect dinosaur bone, but we do not know where he collected it specifically. While we have other nice dinosaur and fossil specimens, this one is by far the most outstanding, if only because of its size and nice shape. It is approximately 11 1/2" x 8 1/2" x 7 1/2" and weighs 36 lbs 4 ozs, or 16.4 kgs. As a final note, before it sold, we did get it confirmed as a whale bone.
